SUMMARY:SW Women's Fiber Arts Collective Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Shannon Wilson will demonstrate felting and Susan Porter will finish dressi
ng the table loom.\nShannon Wilson learned to felt ten years ago and has be
en experimenting with wool tirelessly ever since. She is fascinated by the
felting process and by what she can create by understanding the rules of wo
ol. Since moving to Silver City and learning more about art as the director
of the Blue Dome Gallery, Shannon has become particularly focused on creat
ing wool sculpture.\nAfter graduating from college Susan Porter studied pho
tography and design at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington
, D.C., but fiber has always been her first love. She is passionate about c
olor and often dyes her own yarns. The result is a unique blend of colors t
hat can't be repeated, making my hand-dyed pieces one of a kind. She especi
ally loves that fiber allows us to create functional art: beauty that can b
e used and worn as well as admired.\nThe exhibit would not have been possib
le without the community-minded owners of the building, Marsha Sue Lustig a
nd John Eder who have generously donated the space at 200 W. Market Street.
Lustig and Eder reached out to Silver City MainStreet to see how the space
could be used. A Pop-up gallery space was suggested and now the former ret
ail space is being used to benefit the community. \nDue to COVID-19, there
will be no in-person contact, however, this is a wonderful opportunity to s
ee first-hand the creativity that is still thriving in Silver City and supp
ort our local fiber artists. The exhibit can be viewed through the expansiv
 e windows.\n
