SUMMARY:"Addressing Excessive and Extreme Youth Sentencing in New Mexico,” at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
LOCATION:3845 N Swan Street
DESCRIPTION:Denali Wilson and Abby Long will be reporting on the work being done to end
life-in-prison and long adult sentences for children in New Mexico. This i
ncludes the Second Chance bill, which would prohibit life sentences without
parole for juveniles under the age of 18. The bill, which did not pass in
the last session, will be reintroduced in 2023.\nAbby Long has been working
in the social work field for thirteen years. She has worked in many capaci
ties at several different organizations throughout her career. She became p
assionate about youth justice through her personal experiences with her tee
nage son and the carceral system. Her son was facing the very real possibil
ity of spending the rest of his life incarcerated for a crime that he commi
tted at the age of fourteen. He was lucky and will receive a second chance
but there are so many others that will not unless something changes in our
state. Long, along with many other advocates and loved ones continue to rai
se awareness of these issues, empower and support loved ones, and pass legi
slation that will provide all young people with a second chance. \nDenali W
ilson is an advocate and attorney at the ACLU of New Mexico. She works from
Las Cruces, her hometown. In the courts and before the state parole board,
she represents people across the state serving long adult sentences for cr
imes committed when they were children. In the state capital, she works wit
h the families of those she represents to fight for change in law so that t
hose serving long adult sentences for crimes committed as children have the
second chances they deserve.\nThere are speakers on the patio if you wish
to enjoy the service outside.\nThis Sunday there will be a Children’s Relig
ious Education program. Parents are invited to bring children four years ol
d and above to attend youth-led classes. Ninth grader Ivy Stephens-Etheridg
e, a former CRE student, will read a story and lead a lesson on the theme o
f “Fairness” this Sunday.\nUUFSC Safety Protocol as pursuant to our most re
cent UUA Guidelines:\nWe will not be serving food or drinks in the building
until further notice. Masks will still need to be worn at all times indoor
s and out, except when eating or drinking. We will continue to serve refres
hments on the patio, weather permitting. Visitors are always welcome.\n\n
