At approximately 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, Silver City Police Department officers were called to Walmart in reference to a possible gunshot.

According to Silver City Police Chief Freddie Portillo, when officers arrived they were advised by store employees that a male, later identified as Isaac Vigil, in his 30s, of Silver City, attempted to shoplift a knife when employees heard a loud noise described as a ‘pop.’ Portillo emphasized that an actual gunshot has not been confirmed as employees did not see a firearm and SCPD has not recovered one.

Portillo told the Beat that officers were advised Vigil left the store running west, and they caught up with him on Pine Loop near Griffin’s Propane.

Vigil, who is known to law enforcement, was taken into custody on a shoplifting charge and will be booked into the Grant County Detention Center, according to Portillo.

No one was hurt in the incident, Portillo said, and investigators are still on the case together with looking for a device, including a firearm, which may have caused the ‘pop’ heard by store employees.
