New Mexico State University’s Grant County Cooperative Extension Service will offer a free six-week Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) starting on October 11. Developed and tested by Stanford University and now offered by NM Dept. of Health’s Paths to Health NM, the DSMP, for adults who have type 2 diabetes has been proven to improve health and quality of life for adults with diabetes and pre-diabetes.

The DSMP helps adults with diabetes learn how to manage and improve their health through interactive workshop sessions focusing on problems that are common to individuals dealing with diabetes. Throughout the six weeks, participants focus on building skills to manage their conditions by sharing experiences and providing mutual support. Topics include monitoring blood glucose levels, healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, relaxation, medication use, difficult emotions, problem solving and communicating with doctors.

The weekly sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each Thursday October 11, 18, 25, and November 1, 8, and 15, at the Grant County Extension Office, located at 2610 N. Silver St., in Silver City, NM. To sign-up for the workshop or for more information about the DSMP, call (575) 388-1559. Family, friends, and caregivers are also welcome to attend.

The DSMP is supported by the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Paths to Health NM and is being offered in partnership with New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service.
