Marianne Smith of the Grant County Archeological Society will discuss the earlier inhabitants of Grant County. Her presentation will include pictures of Mimbres pottery and pictographs that can be found in our area.

Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Marianne Smith graduated from law school in 1985 and worked in the legal industry in California and Washington State for over 20 years. She ended her career in 2007 to cruise the Western Hemisphere with her husband aboard their 40-foot sailboat. Together they visited 11 countries by sea and logged over 23,000 ocean miles.

Smith became fascinated with the archaeology and cultural history she encountered during her international travels. Gradually reshaping her lifestyle of exploration from a sailboat to an RV based in Silver City, New Mexico, she joined the Grant County Archaeological Society in 2016 and now acts as their current president while managing the group's website and research library.

Marianne Smith began volunteering at the Western New Mexico University Museum in 2022 where she helps to restore ancient ceramics, and in 2023 the Bureau of Land Management's Las Cruces District appointed her as a member of their 12-person volunteer Southwest Regional Resource Advisory Council.

This Sunday there will be a Children's Religious Education program. Parents are invited to bring children four years old and above to attend youth-led classes. Ninth grader Ivy Stephens-Etheridge, a former CRE student, will read a story and lead a lesson on "Hope."
