Motorists should expect minor delays

ANIMAS-The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) District One office will begin a maintenance operation project on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, to place “chip seal” pavement on various roadways in Hidalgo County. The chip seal process is a surface treatment that is placed on the existing pavement. It is designed to seal out moisture and create a more durable surface extending the longevity of the roadway. 

The chip seal crew will begin work on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, along roadways located around Animas.  Working hours will be Monday through Friday. Roadwork will continue daily from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. until the roadways listed below are complete.

Motorists will encounter flagging and pilot car operation, brooming, and intermittent lane closures and reduced speeds during working operations,expect minor delays. Law Enforcement will be assisting for the safety of our crew.

Motorists are asked to reduce speed, obey posted signs, and use extreme caution, as well as continue to be cautious of heavy equipment and construction personnel in the area. Center striping will not be present in construction zones. Roadways scheduled to receive chip seal are listed in order below:

NM 145 (Goat Camp Rd), milepost 0 to 3.5

NM 338, milepost 11 to 24.5 (Animas)

NM 9 to Playas, milepost 0 to 28.5 (Smelter Rd)

NM 1113 (Smelter Rd & Playas Rd) milepost 0 to 5.9

NM 113, milepost 0 (NM 9) to 20.5 (I-10)

NM 9 to Hachita, milepost 28.5 (Smelter Rd) to 44 (Hachita)

NM 146, milepost 0 (Hachita) to 19.2 (I-10)

NM 81 (NM 9 to the Mexican Border), milepost 0 to 45.8

NM 9 working east, milepost 44 (Hachita) to NM 11 (Columbus)
