(October 21, 2011 Albuquerque, NM) USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner announced today that USDA Rural Development will join the Southwest Cooperative Development Center to celebrate Co-op Month in New Mexico on Friday, October 28th. Cooperatives, their technical assistance providers, and those interested in learning more about cooperatives in New Mexico are welcome to attend all or some of the day's activities.
Cooperatives are organizations that are member-owned and controlled businesses that operate for the mutual benefit of its members. Mr. Brunner noted, "There are many cooperative organizations throughout the state, and we hope many more New Mexicans might benefit by organizing their businesses in this way." He added, "This event will benefit New Mexicans by bringing together cooperatives that will not only be celebrating their achievements, but who will also share their knowledge with each other and with those who work with or who want to start cooperatives." All interested parties are welcome to attend.
The event, hosted by Southwest Cooperative Development Center, begins with a coffee and networking hour, followed by informative presentations by cooperatives and a luncheon, and concludes with field trips to cooperatives in the afternoon. The presentations will underscore the diversity of some of the many groups that have chosen to organize as cooperatives: banks, grass-fed beef producers, credit unions, housing groups, banks, and commercial retail organizations, such as REI.
The symposium will be held on October 28th at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, 2401 12th St, NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104. The cost for the day's events, including lunch, is $20. For more information or to RSVP, contact 505.761.4953 or email
