How to reduce your power use during the holidays
(ALBUQUERQUE, NM) – Between holiday decorations, hosting parties, house guests, and more time at home away from work, energy bills can increase during the holiday season. To keep your PNM bill on Santa’s nice list, follow just 5 seasonal tips to cut back on your energy use while still enjoying the festivities.
- Use LED string lights or laser light projectors. LED string lights are cheaper than old incandescent lights. Outdoor laser projectors that shine holiday lights on your home cost even less on your electric bill, take up less room in your garage, and are safer than climbing on the roof.
- Consider a fiber optic holiday tree. Often, only one light source is used to light up the entire Christmas tree. Turn off all the lights in the room when your Christmas tree is on. Darkening the room and keeping the focus on your tree makes for a nice holiday ambiance and saves you money on your electric bill.
- Use a power strip and a timer for your Christmas tree or outdoor lights. Avoid keeping your holiday lights on during the day or when everyone is sleeping.
- Lower your thermostat when hosting guests. People naturally generate heat, it makes it more comfortable for guests, and lowers your energy bill.
- Avoid space heaters. They may be tempting because they provide immediate and concentrated heat, but they are incredibly dangerous and cost a great deal on your electric bill. If you used only one space heater every day in one winter month, it will add about $40 to your PNM bill. Space heaters also can overwhelm power strips and often cannot safely supply the power needed to operate one. PNM recommends lowering your thermostat as low as comfort permits and staying safe by wearing warm clothing and using blankets to save the most on your electric bill.
