It’s pretty amazing that some areas of the state received snowfall just a couple of days ago. However, here in Grant County… it’s finally feeling like Spring.

For some people, this is a terrible time of the year. Maybe it’s the junipers… maybe it is some other pollen, but for some folks it is allergy-time and that’s not fun. I honestly feel bad for the folks that are coughing, sneezing, their eyes are watering, and they can barely speak. Hopefully it will pass quickly.

But for a lot of other people, it’s time to think about warm weather fun. In Grant County, there really are many things you can enjoy outdoors. We will begin seeing more folks riding bicycles. There will be lots of energetic people hiking through the area on the Continental Divide Trail. Folks with fishing licenses will start visiting some of our local lakes, rivers and streams in search of that one big catch that they can share on Facebook and other forms of social media. It’s time to take off the hardtops and drive around topless, letting the wind blow through your hair while riding through the Gila or many other country roads. At the Chamber office, we are already getting inquiries about where to soak in Hot Springs and where to go camping. Although the nights are still cool, there are lots of stars to be seen, and this is a great time to go stargazing. If you like swinging clubs, the golf course is starting to green up nicely. This is also the time for the Senior Olympic Games. If you look at the Chamber of Commerce website calendar, you will see all the activities seniors can participate in during the Senior Olympics. And the local events… area car shows, music festivals, bike races, and more. Of course, this is also a great time for the family. They can go camping, find a nice place for a picnic, invite the friends over for a backyard barbeque, or as the wind dies down and the warmth of the Sun heats the area… go for a swim, play in a splash park, or just run through a sprinkler in your front yard.

And by the way, you can never be too old to feel young again. There’s nothing wrong with senior citizens getting their feet wet and proving that you can be a young as you feel. Kathy and I may be considered Senior Citizens, but we can have fun with a soaker squirt gun just as much as a 10-year old.

There’s no doubt we live in an area that provides so many cool things to do. If you don’t like the outdoors, visit our area museums. Go to one of the local libraries. Take in a movie at one of the two theaters in the area. If you like to eat… take two weeks and visit every restaurant that sells tacos, then write a letter to this paper’s editor telling him how many different tacos you found in Grant County (you don’t have to mention how many pounds you gained). Visit Fort Bayard. Go the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Visit some of our historic sites such as the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site in the Mimbres Valley.

If you need ideas of things to do, call the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce. Our phone number is (575) 538-3785, or visit our website at www.silvercity.org.

By the way, earlier I mentioned driving around topless and I’m sure there were a couple of people who questioned that. What I was referring to is taking the top off your car or SUV and ride around without the top. The Chamber of Commerce is not suggesting you should ride around the other way topless. We hope you have a great week!
