SILVER CITY, NM, October 24, 2023 – The Gila National Forest is on the long road to recovery of a landscape burned during the Black Fire, which blackened 325,136 acres of state, private, and Gila National Forest lands in 2022. The vast majority of the fire perimeter burned at low to moderate intensity, with less than 10% that burned at high intensity. Where low to moderate intensity fire occurred, recovery of surface vegetation is expected to occur naturally.

In this time where the freedom to read is constantly being challenged, it’s important to understand these book bans and to celebrate literature. Southwest Word Fiesta Presents: Gila Film School

Gayla Lacy will present work from student filmmakers in the New Mexico State University Gila Film School. These students have received hands-on experience out in the field, while also learning about the history of the Gila wilderness. NMSU partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to create the Gila Film School. The program aims to help protect local wildlife in the Gila wilderness.

SW Women’s Fiber Art Collective Offers Rug Hooking Class

rughookingsample of rug hooking.SW Women's Fiber Arts Collective (SWFAC) is offering the public the opportunity to learn rug hooking using t-shirts. Member Anita McDaniel will be teaching the class on November 5 and 19, 2023 at 10 am to noon. The registration deadline is October 30, 2023.

Rug hooking is done by pulling strips of material through a stiff woven base with a crochet-type hook mounted in a handle.  You only need to learn one basic stitch and you’ve mastered it.  It has been around for ages, and origin stories vary from the Egyptians to the Vikings but someone, somewhere figured it out, and by the mid 1800’s rug hooking appears in New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces.  The self-sufficient colonial women decorated and warmed their floors with rugs made with used scraps of wool cut into narrow strips and hooked on burlap sacks.

Veterans Day ceremony to take place at American Legion Hall Nov. 11, 2023

American Legion Allingham-Golden Post 18 Hall will host the annual Veterans Day ceremony at 1100 on Nov. 11, 2023, at  409 W. College Avenue, Silver City. The Veterans Coalition, made up of the American Legion, Gaffney-Oglesby Marine Corps League Detachment 1328, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 358, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars will participate in the ceremony. The public is invited.

Son was just at his house bothering them and yelling/he is no longer there. Deputy advised spoke to the son and got him calmed down for the night. Second caller advised that (redacted) keeps walking up the hill to their residence and is yelling he is going to batter them.

Highway 152 – Emory Pass – 3:14 a.m.
SUV on its hood/was in the roadway/didn't see anyone around it/vehicle appeared to be off. Deputy advised vehicle is on its top/damage all around/newer model Cadillac Escalade/vehicle in the middle of the road/wrecker en route/need NMSP/1 and ½ miles past county line/NMSP will be sending someone out.
