Bring out the family to Lake Roberts for a morning of fishing, fun, and festivities!
MIMBRES, NM, May 26, 2023 – Kicking off the start of summer, the 9th Annual Aldo Leopold Kids Fishing Derby is scheduled Saturday, June 3 at Lake Roberts, north of Silver City, New Mexico. This event last took place in 2019, as it was interrupted by COVID in 2020 and 2021, and cancelled due to the Black Fire last year.
“We’re really excited to bring back this popular event this year,” said Wilderness District Ranger Henry Provencio. “The Mora National Fish Hatchery will stock Lake Roberts with retired Gila trout breeder stock for this event, so kids have a shot at catching a record-sized trout!”
The event is sponsored by Gila National Forest, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Trout Unlimited, and Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy. Smokey Bear will make an appearance to greet all his fans.

RESERVE, NM, May 18, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District is planning to implement two prescribed fires within the next month. The two prescribed ire units are the 1,674-acre Cold Springs unit, located along Forest Road 94 southeast of Apache Creek, and the 1,608-acre Sheep Basin unit, located south of the Village of Reserve. These prescribed fire projects are planned to occur as soon as desired weather and fire conditions are aligned.
Low-lying smoke and heavy presence of firefighters on forest roads may periodically impact the public’s access to areas adjacent to the prescribed fire. If this occurs, road guards and/or signs will be in place to warn of hazards.

What is the best pre-hospital treatment for a rattlesnake bite? Find out at unique symposium June 23-24
RODEO, NM — When treating venomous bites from our local rattlesnakes, both in people and pets, the list of what not to do is longer than the list of what to do.
Experts agree that three pre-hospital actions can save lives: 1) immediately seeking medical care or calling 911, 2) removing watches and jewelry, collars or reins, or anything else that restricts blood flow, and 3) keeping the affected area at the same level or above the heart.
When treating bites from rattlesnakes and other pitvipers, experts agree you should not apply suction, heat, pressure or turniquettes, and you definitely should not administer Benadryl, aspirin, steroids, or antibiotics. Electrical stimulation treatments (car batteries) don't work, and cutting into the bite can lead to infection and permanent tissue damage.

This is a reiki experience where participants sit in a circle and share their Reiki energy with each other and then silently send reiki to other people and/or situations as each person wishes. It will be more along the lines of a Reiki meditation. There is no “hands on” component. The joint sharing of Reiki can be a powerful experience. As we treat, so we are treated with the Reiki energy.
