Hurley Council holds regular meeting 101017, hears report on Pumpkin Patch

The Town of Hurley Regular Meeting took place Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 5 p.m. All councilors attended as well as Mayor Fernando Martinez.

Public Input was first on the agenda and Raul Turrieta presented the tax rate changes. He shared the tax warrant with the councilors.

Sondra Berry of Nevada Avenue asked how to petition the Council regarding building a fence. Martinez asked that she consult with the code enforcer as there are currently no limitations for fences.

The Hurley Pride report was presented by Hurley Pride President Tammy Gonzales, beginning with the report on the Pumpkin Patch activity from the previous weekend. Gonzales reported attendance of more than 400 people and was pleased to see so many young families. The Hurley Pride committee begins decorating for Christmas by Thanksgiving and will coordinate usage of the bucket truck with the town so they can hang lights. Gonzales said Hurley Pride will be putting flags up for Veteran’s Day and Pearl Harbor Day. They are also getting ready for a visit from Santa mid-December.

Matt Favre from Western New Mexico Communications presented on an alternative internet service for Hurley. Favre wants to provide cost effective service for Hurley from a local company. An ordinance to provide service or a franchise agreement is needed to commence. Councilor Richard Maynes moved to start the process, and Favre said he will provide similar documents from other municipalities as examples.

Council approved Esther Gil to attend the 2017 NDC Academy in Washington, D.C., representing Hurley. The Hurley water project is one of the top four projects chosen to present at a national level. Council also approved Lori Ortiz and Darlene McBride to attend the 2017 Municipal Election School in Albuquerque. Council approved Ortiz to attend the Local Government Division Budget Conference and for Jerry Martinez to attend the Utility Operator Certification Program.

During the Mayor’s report Martinez thanked Gil for volunteering to attend the DC trip and for representing Hurley.

Gil reported attending the Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments meeting where she volunteered to be the new chairwoman. Mayor Richard Bauch of Santa Clara will be the vice chairman.

Next month Ortiz is slated to discuss the process the town will go through to auction vehicles.

The next Regular Meeting for the Town of Hurley will take place November 14, 2017 at 5:00 pm in the Town Hall located at 101 Cortez Avenue in Hurley. The meeting is open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend.
