ALAMOGORDO — NMAAA, (New Mexico Aviation Aerospace Association) a statewide economic development and advocacy organization, works to ensure constant growth of New Mexico's aviation and aerospace sectors.

Annually NMAAA hosts an expo for middle school through high school students to learn about careers in STEM, aviation, and the aerospace industry. The idea behind the expo is that a hands-on experience with aviation goes a longer way with students than just watching a video would.

"Getting kids in front of aircraft, actual engineers, companies that are hiring people, makes a huge difference," said NMAAA President Bill Shuert. "We've found that getting young adults involved in aviation and giving them the ability to talk to pilots who know what you need to get there – it's very beneficial. New Mexico should be at the center of all aviation in the United States. We've got the best flying weather, the best ranges, and we have a huge opportunity with our students to get them moving forward and interested in aviation."

Previously, the expo was held at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. In October 2016, the expo was held at Holloman Air Force Base for the first time with about 2,500 students attending the event.

On Oct. 5, thousands of children from Alamogordo and across the state are expected to attend the 2017 Aviation Aerospace STEM at the Alamogordo - White Sands Regional Airport. The expo price tag is projected to be $35,000, which has been paid mostly through donations.
