Darwin Knapp Bleak, 93, a resident of Mimbres, NM

Darwin Knapp Bleak was born on August 18, 1929 in Fredonia, Arizona. He was the oldest son of 4 siblings. The family moved around a lot because of Darwin’s stepfather’s job with the Forest Service. They ended up in Grant County, New Mexico when Darwin was in high school. With the exception of military deployment, his wife’s schooling and short vacations, Darwin hadn’t left since.

Darwin enlisted in the military before his 18th birthday and before finishing high school. He trained on bases around the United States and served as a gunsmith in Guam. One of his duties was to insure soldiers attended classes to help them pass the GED. Since he was there anyway, he studied as well and got his GED while in the military.
