The Sixth Judicial District Court warns the public to be aware of fake text messages that claim recipients must appear in "New Mexico District Court." The texts are circulating to residents in Luna County and residents in Hidalgo and Grant counties also may receive them.
"These text messages are not legitimate and the Sixth Judicial District Court and the Magistrate Courts in Luna, Grant and Hidalgo counties will never send text messages requesting payment or threatening legal action," said Chief Judge Jarod Hofacket. "People should not click on any links within the fake text messages or send any money."
The fraudulent text messages state recipients must appear in New Mexico District Court for an overdue traffic violation or face arrest, suspension of driver's license, vehicle impoundment, garnishment of wages, and seizure of assets. The texts include a link directing recipients to act immediately.
Chief Judge Hofacket urged residents in the Sixth Judicial District Court "to immediately delete the message and contact the court directly to verify if they may have outstanding court obligations." Contact information for the Sixth Judicial District Court can be found on the court's website .
