It's Easter Sunday.

Today, Christendom is united.

Roman Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and other churches within Christianity are all celebrating Easter Sunday on the same date.

This is the holiest day of the year for Christians.

This is the day that Christians believe the Christ Jesus rose from the dead.

This is the day that Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Son of God who had been put to death three days earlier on Good Friday.

Different cultures celebrate Easter Sunday in different ways.

In the United States, the religious meaning of this day can sometimes seem overwhelmed by the commercial aspects of the marketplace.

Wearing pastel-colored dresses. Visiting the Easter Bunny. Dying white eggs in vibrant colors and designs. Searching for eggs during an Easter egg hunt. Eating one too many jelly beans. Deciding whether to first bite the ears of a chocolate bunny or eat that piece of chocolate candy last. Having dinner with the extended family.

For some, it's one of two days that they make a special point to go to church. (The other being either Christmas Day or Christmas Eve.)

For some, it's a day that they may be alone again. Separated from loved ones. Yearning for that unexpected call or visit from family, friend, or neighbor who just wants to say "hello."

For many, it's a day to reflect on hope for the future. To welcome life. To view Spring as a season of re-birth.

Whether this Sunday is the holiest day in your faith's calendar or just another day at work or another day when you can relax (okay, at least try to relax), may you find this day to be one filled with justice, mercy, love, and goodness.

Happy Easter!
