Today is Thanksgiving.

Today is a day that Americans have set aside to give thanks.

Today is a day off from work for most Americans. A day that many will enjoy a hearty meal. A day that many will celebrate with family and friends. A day that many will spend watching football games.

But it's important to remember that not everyone has Thanksgiving as a day off from work. Some Americans stand at the ready to defend our nation.

Around the corner. And around the world.

The photograph above shows an example of an American working on Thanksgiving.

An unnamed American wearing the uniform of our country.

An unnamed American serving our nation in the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.

The Marine was manning a guard post at Observation Post (OP) Athens in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Thanksgiving, November 28, 2013. According to the U S Marine Corps, "The unique view at OP Athens provided the servicemembers with a 360-degree view of the area surrounding the village of Kajaki and Forward Operating Base Zeebrugge."

Today, there are many Americans just like this Marine.

Americans serving our country.

Around the corner. And around the world.

Standing guard. Walking a perimeter. Looking at a computer screen. Sweeping a floor. Cooking food. Delivering supplies. Providing medical care. Offering prayers.

On this Thanksgiving, we give thanks to all those who serve the United States of America.

May you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving today.
