Washington, D.C. - Today, Iran’s parliament voted to support the closure of the Straight of Hormuz, potentially cutting off the route of 20 million barrels of oil per day. The move would be part of the response from Iran for U.S. strikes against their nuclear weapon sites and is designed to impact America’s oil and gasoline prices.

“Iran is trying to use energy as a weapon, but thanks to America’s energy workers we’re producing more oil than ever and in a stronger position to withstand aggression like this,” said Daniel Turner, Founder and Executive Director for Power The Future. “But let’s be clear—our strategic petroleum reserves are still much too low because Joe Biden drained them for political cover. Now that we’re facing international instability, we’re left to face this threat without the additional security of oil reserves. Biden’s legacy continues to weaken us.”

In 2022, former President Biden ordered the largest drawdown of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in history in response to his record high gas prices. Despite promises to refill the SPR, Biden left office with it less than 55% full.

The most recent report from the Energy Information Administration shows the Untiled States is producing a record amount of oil domestically.
