Exposed and Extinct: Michael Bloomberg's Climate Lawyer Scheme Shuts Down

Washington, D.C. — Amid increasing scrutiny from congressional and state-level investigations, a Michael Bloomberg-backed climate program that paid the salaries of "fellows" embedded inside state attorneys general offices has quietly shut down. According to the Washington Free Beacon, Bloomberg's State Energy and Environmental Impact Center placed paid attorneys inside AG offices in at least ten states, where they helped drive costly lawsuits on behalf of a partisan, billionaire-funded agenda. The move comes after U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky) opened an investigation last year.

"While affordability is on everyone's mind, these lawyers were busy manufacturing lawsuits that made energy, and everything that depends on it more expensive," said Daniel Turner, Founder and Executive Director for Power The Future. "Credit to Chairman Comer for turning up the heat because that kind of scrutiny is exactly why this scheme couldn't survive in the daylight. This wasn't philanthropy, it was a billionaire paying the salaries of government lawyers to drive up costs on working Americans so he could feel good about his climate legacy. They didn't even bother defending it in court, choosing to shut the lights off and hope no one would notice. Nobody should be fooled: these groups will simply find new ways to hide, and vigorous oversight needs to continue during the remainder of the 119th Congress."

Michael Bloomberg's fortune has more than doubled over the last six years, growing from roughly $48 billion in 2020 to an estimated $109.4 billion today, even as the litigation his money funded helped raise energy costs on American families and businesses.
