Washington, D.C. - Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) is melting down over taxpayers not footing the bill for his exclusive junket to Brazil for the annual United Nations climate gathering, COP30. Despite his trip taking place on the heels of a government shutdown he supported, Senator Whitehouse's journey to South America was documented by moments of praising communist China and enjoying "delicious empanadas." According to his office, the Senator's trip was "with the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) Institute," with no disclosure over who funded his travel.
"It's absurd enough that Senator Whitehouse boarded a plane for his elitist climate junket immediately after the government shutdown he supported, but what makes it even worse is the fact he won't disclose who paid for his trip," said Daniel Turner, Founder and Executive Director for Power The Future. "If that wasn't tone deaf enough, Whitehouse decided praising China instead of supporting American workers was the key takeaway from his journey. President Trump deserves all the credit for not wasting a single taxpayer dollar on this failed trip. If Senator Whitehouse needs a tropical vacation none of us should have to pick up the tab."
Earlier this year, Senator Whitehouse was at the center of ethics questions about his role in steering millions of dollars to a climate group associated with his wife. According to reports, Senator Whitehouse has a net worth over $24 million dollars.
