While Joe tells reporters that those whose lives have been upended by Hurricane Helene are happy with the $750 dollars promised them by the federal government, we are watching once again the generosity of the American people. And what can generously be called inefficiency of the federal government.

FEMA has responded but the response has been slow. Insurance companies have gotten heavy equipment into areas that need debris to be cleared or roads to be built so they can help those that are stranded. Right alongside them are private individuals with their own equipment aiding in the effort. But don't worry, the feds will be there soon.

More importantly, many people are isolated without food or water or other supplies. Several NASCAR drivers with helicopters asked how they could help. They have delivered generators and Starlink systems so people can have electricity and contact with family in the 'outside' world.

I have family in Asheville, in an area that was not as heavily damaged. Outdoor enthusiast groups have used canoes, kayaks, and mule trains to get food, water, and medicine to isolated areas. Bass boats are loaded with the same supplies. All of them are also bringing people out after completing their deliveries.

Many of these groups or individuals are not specifically trained to be rescuers. They just care about their fellow citizens. They see a need and they are responding in any way they can. We have seen this after every natural disaster. Americans are caring people. They don't look at any demographic characteristic when reaching out to help. Race, gender, ethnicity, none of those matter.

So good for Kamala and Joe. You keep sitting on the beach or raising money. In fact, stay out of the way and let locals take care of the recovery. They'll do so much better than the feds have ever done. Or ever will.
