Lorraine Gala Lewis and Michael Kanteena share the historic teachings of their cultures that inspire the ceramic work they produce.
The ancient cultures of Chaco, Mesa Verde and Mimbres have been preserved for over a thousand years through their pottery. These include some of the greatest forms and patterns ever created anywhere.
In this class Michael Kanteena will be teaching the methods of pinched and coiled pots, and how to paint them to look over a thousand years old. Like the tools they used, our tools will be simple and handmade.
Lorraine Gala Lewis will be sharing her techniques and the pre columbian influences on it. This will include vessels, bowls, plates and mugs. She will discuss the preservation and protection of ancient pottery with the use of hands on pottery shards. She will demonstrate painting and ornament making. Students will be involved in the painting of pottery and the making of ornaments.
