"Community, Covenant, and a Dash of Comedy," at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Sunday, February 26, 2023, 10:00am |
Rev. Claudia Elferdink, with the aid of local musicians Ken Keppler and Jeanie McLerie of Bayou Seco, will ask the question, “How do apples, rhubarb, eggplants and pennies help us find meaning?”
Elferdink plans to have fun and ask deep questions. “We’ll hear the wisdom of octogenarians and two-year-olds, in the Unitarian Universalist faith tradition that’s three decades old here and almost five centuries old world-wide,” she said.
She added, “What is the “beating heart” of this Fellowship? We need each other to find out. In a playful conversation, let’s look at how stories show us who we are and how we welcome our neighbors- including apples, rhubarb, and eggplants!”
Jeanie McLerie and Ken Keppeler, Silver City’s own band Bayou Seco, will provide music in their own inimitable style. Come ready to sing!
Rev. Claudia Elferdink lives in Silver City and is both a retired Unitarian Universalist Minister and the Co-Coordinator of the Reckoning International Unitarian Histories Project. She started visiting Grant County when her children began to settle here around 2000. As guest minister, she has led occasional Sunday Services at UUFSC since then.
Rev. Elferdink has served on the MRAC Board and led the Interfaith River Blessing at the 2022 Gila River Festival. A native of Los Angeles, she trained at Antioch Graduate School of Education and Harvard Divinity School. She served as a religious professional in New England congregations for over 25 years after being an elementary school teacher and PBS TV Producer. She is a published historian, revealing the stories of “lost” international Unitarian women. She loves a good story and creating interactive worship services.
BAYOU SECO's brand of Southwestern Chilegumbo - Cajun two-steps, waltzes, polkas and rancheras, chotis's, meringues and huapangos, and, perhaps a broom dance, is cross-cultural, multi-lingual and transcends labels and pigeon holes. Bayou Seco's roots are in the deep south and southwest, but their branches reach far across the world. Ken Keppeler and Jeanie McLerie are the heart of this group that has been going strong since 1980. They live in Silver City.
