Emcee Fred Baca said: "He was here for the whole program, but he wasn't giving a presentation to the Juarequi family. I'm going to let Mr. Arnold Lopez speak as the mayor of Santa Clara."
Lopez said:"There's a lot of history between Fort Bayard and Santa Clara. It was Central at the time that Fort Bayard began. It wasCentral, and then they changed to Santa Clara. But this is my third year there, and I grew up in when it was Central. So I take a lot of pride from there, and I wanted to say thank you to the Jaurequie family. So from the village, I would just like to present this to you, sir. Thank you so much.

Recently Ann, a reader of the Grant County Beat, described how after a minor fender bender, Liberty Mutual declared her 2005 Lexus SUV a total loss. It shocked her since the car was drivable and had only sustained damage to the passenger side doors and the rear bumper.
The Liberty adjustor said the car was worth $5000, and it would cost $4500 to repair which made it for the company a total loss. This shocked Ann.
US 180 at mile marker 118 is now open. Removed from NM Roads.

The town of Bayard held a regular meeting July 15, 2026. Attendance included Mayor John L. Ojinaga, Mayor Pro Tem Eloy Gonzales, Eloy Medina, Gilbert Ortiz and Charles Gray. Martha Salas, city clerk, also attended.
The council approved the agenda as is. Medina wanted to have number 19 removed that concerned the abatement of a residence since it had already been voted on June 24, 2026. Yvonne Gonzales, city attorney, explained why it had been put on the agenda. When an administrative decision had been made after a hearing it will be appropriate to make a written decision in a council meeting because of a possible appeal in the district court. She continued to expand on the reasons. Someone pointed out that it had not been a hearing but a special meeting. Yvonne Gonzales said it had been in essence a hearing.

Silver Consolidated Schools Superintendent William Hawkins told the Beat that the school district had closed on the sale of Sixth Street Elementary to Western New Mexico University to be used as a facility for the Early Childhood Education Center of Excellence.
Hawkins also shared some photos of some of those involved in the purchase on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
He oppressed his appreciation and gratitude for the university purchasing the historic school building near downtown Silver City.

The town of Hurley had a regular meeting July 14, 2026. Mayor Reynaldo Maynes, and Councilors Aron Phillips, Ester Gil, Robert Candelaria and Jason Cox attended.
The council approved the agenda with the exception of moving the closed session to a different part of the meeting.
Public input
Adam Polley, a resident, said the agenda had not been done correctly according to the open meetings act. The reason for executive session says police department, that would not be a person. If you will be having a discussion about personnel, you must name it personnel. He added, "We in the public have no ghastly idea what your resolutions say when you bring them up to the council." When financial reports have been brought up, he has only heard how well they have done. Having a financial report means bringing those numbers out. These would be some things to be more transparent.
