Strong winds and blowing dust expected through Oct. 17

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is advising motorists to use caution when traveling in southern New Mexico as strong winds and blowing dust are expected to significantly impact travel from Oct. 15-17, with conditions worsening into the evening hours.

The National Weather Service forecasts wind gusts exceeding 50 mph along the international border.

Motorists are encouraged to monitor local weather forecasts before beginning their trips and visit www.nmroads.com for the latest roadway information. Conditions can change rapidly, and blowing dust can quickly develop into dangerous, blinding dust storms, particularly in remote areas.

If you encounter a dust storm, follow these safety guidelines:

Avoid driving into or through a dust storm.Do not wait until visibility is severely reduced to pull off the roadway. Exit the highway as soon as it is safe to do so.If you encounter blowing dust, check traffic around your vehicle, including in front, behind and to the sides, and begin slowing down.Never stop in the travel lanes. Pull completely off the roadway and as far onto the right shoulder as possible, ensuring you are a safe distance from traffic.Turn off all vehicle lights, including headlights, taillights and emergency flashers, so other drivers do not follow your lights into the stopped vehicle.Set your parking brake and remove your foot from the brake pedal.Remain inside your vehicle with your seat belt buckled until the storm passes.Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially alert to changing weather conditions and reduce their speed as conditions warrant.

NMDOT will monitor roadway conditions in coordination with local law enforcement. Travel advisories and roadway updates will be available at www.nmroads.com or by calling 511.
