(Silver City, NM, May 20, 2026) – On Saturday, June 6, the Gila National Forest will host two free events at Lake Roberts to celebrate public lands: the Annual Aldo Leopold Kids Fishing Derby and a National Trails Day volunteer event to help maintain trails around the lake. The Fishing Derby coincides with New Mexico's Free Fishing Day, and all fishing fees will be waived.

Mora National Fish Hatchery will stock Lake Roberts with retired Gila trout, highlighting recovery efforts led by the Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the New Mexico Department of Wildlife.

Aldo2A family finds a shady spot for fishing fun. (USDA Forest Service)In addition to the abundantly stocked lake, the Fishing Derby will include hands-on demonstrations that teach a variety of fishing skills, prizes including tackle boxes and camping gear, and opportunities for kids and adults to learn about the fish and waterways of the Gila National Forest.

Every child under 18 who registers will receive a free fishing rod, goodie bag, and hot dog lunch while supplies last. The Fishing Derby runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony.

Volunteers will work on trails surrounding Lake Roberts, with beautiful views at every step. By clearing brush or repairing a trail, forest users can participate in a nationwide movement to ensure our trails remain accessible and resilient for everyone.

Volunteers should bring water, sunscreen, and work gloves, though some loaner gear will be available. This National Trails Day event will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Visitors may experience traffic congestion in the Lake Roberts area. Please take caution and watched for slowed or stopped vehicles if driving in the vicinity.

Co-sponsors of the events include Trout Unlimited, Bat Conservation International, National Forest Foundation, University of New Mexico Early Childhood Services Center, Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy, The Moose Lodge, and other local businesses.
