New 17-minute documentary reconstructs the 1864 lost-gold case in the mountains of southwest New Mexico from the contemporary record
SILVER CITY, N.M. — November 5, 2026 — Frontier Verdict, the documentary series examining the documented cases of the American frontier, has published "The Lost Adams Diggings," a 17-minute episode reconstructing the 1864 expedition that found gold in a New Mexico canyon — and was never able to find it again. In 1864, a party of prospectors led by Adams, guided into the mountains by the scout known as Gotch Ear, worked a canyon placer rich enough that a nugget the size of a hen's egg was later sold in Tucson.
The party was driven out, and though Adams and others searched for years afterward, the canyon was never reliably relocated. It remains the most famous lost mine in New Mexico, commonly placed in the high country of present-day Catron and Grant counties. The episode rebuilds the case from the surviving accounts of the expedition and the documented searches that followed, with the record read aloud in the series' "From the record" segments, before testing the verdict history has handed down: was the canyon ever really lost, or was it hidden?"Every town in Grant County has heard this story at a campfire," said the producer of Frontier Verdict. "We wanted to put the record itself n front of viewers — what the men said happened, in their own words — and let the case stand or fall on that."
