The skies above Whitewater Mesa will be filled with colorful kites of all shapes and sizes as the annual Fun Kite Flying Picnic returns on Saturday April 4th.
This family-friendly annual event attracts almost 200 people to the vast mesa off Highway 180 north of Glenwood.
Sanctioned by the American Kitefliers Association, kite enthusiasts come from all over to show off their spectacular creations.
It's not just for pros -- everyone from toddlers to senior citizens send their kites skyward. Others just enjoy the colorful spectacle of the kites diving and weaving in the wind.
Photo by David ThornburgThere is plenty of space without fences or trees to tangle kite strings, and room to park for a tailgate picnic.
For a completely different experience, walk one or all six of the labyrinths and a maze across the road at Whitewater Mesa Labyrinths. You can also hike the Gold Dust trail into the Gila Wilderness which starts at the East edge of the kite field.
It all happens from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday April 4 at Whitewater Mesa Labyrinths, 355 Bursum Road (NM 159) off Hwy 180, between Glenwood and Alma, NM 88039.

Water, kite-mending supplies, a porta-potty and loaner kites are provided.
Bring your picnic, your kite, your laughter, the whole family and all your friends, your sunhat, sunscreen and something to sit on.
