SILVER CITY, N.M. — Vitalant is calling on the Silver City community to help address a critical blood shortage by donating at the upcoming blood drive at the Grant County Chamber of Commerce.
Blood donations have steadily declined since May, with the July Fourth holiday further reducing donor turnout. As a result, Vitalant's supply of type O blood has fallen to its lowest level in two years. While type O donors are especially needed, donors of all blood types are encouraged to give to help ensure local hospitals have the blood they need for trauma patients, surgeries, cancer treatments, childbirth complications, and other medical emergencies.
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion. One blood donation can help save more than one life, making every donor a vital part of the community's healthcare system.

Thursday, July 23: 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Friday, July 24: 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 25: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
As a special thank you, all presenting donors will receive a free Harley-style Vitalant T-shirt while supplies last.
Giving blood is safe, easy, and takes about an hour. In addition to helping save lives, donors receive a mini-health screening that includes pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and temperature, along with testing of their donated blood. Donors can conveniently track many of these health metrics through their secure online Vitalant donor account.
"Critical blood shortages can only be overcome when communities come together," said Monique Hilverding. "We encourage everyone who is eligible to make an appointment, keep their appointment, and help ensure patients don't have to wait for the lifesaving blood they need."
