COLUMBUS, N.M. - Parents and caregivers are invited to a car seat clinic from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, October 17, at the Columbus Fire Department at 504 Wisconsin St, Columbus, N.M.
Nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will provide car seat inspections and hands-on assistance to help parents and caregivers ensure child safety and booster seats are properly selected, installed and used.
Inspections are free and will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is required.
Participants are encouraged to bring their car seat, car seat manual, vehicle owner's manual, and the child who uses the seat.
If a car seat is determined to be recalled, expired, damaged or otherwise unsafe, a replacement seat may be available for $35. Replacement seats must be paid for in cash, and participants must bring the exact $35 amount. No change will be available. The child must be present to be eligible for a replacement seat.
During the fitting station:
Certified technicians will spend approximately 30 minutes per seat helping parents and caregivers learn the proper selection, installation and use of car seats and booster seats.
Participants will learn about common car seat safety errors and have an opportunity to ask questions.
Technicians will inspect seats for proper fit, installation, expiration dates, recalls and other potential safety concerns.
Replacement seats will be available for $35 when a technician determines whether a replacement is necessary. Exact cash is required.
Car seat fitting stations are funded by the New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division and are available to the public.
