House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong Responds to "New America" Controversy, Points to Real Issues Facing New Mexico
SANTA FE, NM — House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong (R-Magdalena)released the following statement today on the recent controversy surrounding President Trump's social media post about New Mexico's name:
"Let me be clear about something: no political party owns New Mexican pride. The love we have for this state, for our mountains and our mesas, our acequias and our arroyos, our people and our history, doesn't check a party registration at the door. It crosses every political and ideological line that exists in this state, because it isn't political to begin with. It's who we are.
Let me say plainly: New Mexico's name and identity are not up for negotiation, not by this president or any other. That was true before Sunday's post and it'll be true long after everyone's forgotten about it.
So, when I see New Mexico Democrats manufacturing outrage over a social media post, I have to ask what they're really trying to accomplish. They know as well as I do that a post is not policy. They know the President of the United States has no constitutional authority to rename this state. What they're hoping is that if they yell loud enough about a troll post out of the White House, you won't notice what's happening right here in the Round House.
Because the truth is inconvenient for them. After nearly a century of one-party control, New Mexico ranks at or near the bottom of the nation in the categories that actually determine whether families can build a life here: education outcomes, public safety, healthcare access, economic opportunity. Meanwhile, the same legislative majority that claims to speak for New Mexican values has spent this year mired in one ethical controversy after another, campaign finance questions, abuse of position, misuse of taxpayer resources to manage political damage. When your own house is in that much disorder, a rage bait post from over a thousand miles away is a gift. It's a distraction, and they know it.
Let's talk about what Democrats desperately don't want New Mexicans focused on this November, because Donald Trump is not on the ballot. What is on the ballot is whether we keep sending our most talented young people out of state because there's nothing here for them to build a future on. What's on the ballot is whether our kids keep falling further behind in classrooms that have been failed by the same policies for generations. What's on the ballot is whether families can find a doctor, whether neighborhoods are safe, whether the taxes New Mexicans work hard to pay actually go toward roads and schools and clinics, or whether they keep funding programs that serve the people in power and not the people they represent.
That's the underlying message every time, even when they don't say the words out loud: paint us as fringe, as extremists, as somehow un-New Mexican, so voters don't have to engage with the substance. It's a substitute for an argument, because they don't have a real answer for ninety plus years of decline. We do have an answer. It's the same one we've always had: a New Mexico where families can stay, where kids get educated, where small businesses can open their doors without being buried in red tape, where the people who built this state get to share in its future instead of watching it get driven off a cliff by the people who've been steering it.
New Mexicans are bigger than a Truth Social post, and we are bigger than the distraction Democrats are trying to make out of it. We're going to stay focused on the real fight, freeing this state from ninety years of the same failed leadership, so that New Mexico can finally become the place our children don't have to leave to succeed."
