SANTA FE, NM – Every member of the New Mexico House Republican Caucus has signed a letter to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham thanking her for her commitment to helping flood-impacted communities and calling for a coordinated effort across state government to help those communities recover, especially those hit by heavy downpours in San Juan, Curry and Bernalillo Counties.
In the letter, House Republicans say they look forward to working with the Governor's office, state agencies and FEMA to release state and federal aid as quickly as possible and urge the state to keep constant communication with local officials so they know what assistance is available, what documentation is required, and whether local matching funds are needed.
The caucus also highlights major infrastructure damage reported by local officials, including washed-out roads and bridges, damaged culverts, and drinking water and wastewater systems in need of repair. House Republicans urge that future funding decisions be made jointly by the Governor and bipartisan legislative leadership.
"Families have been evacuated and homes and businesses have been damaged or destroyed," said House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong. "Local leaders know what their communities need better than anyone in Santa Fe, and the state's response should reflect that. We stand ready to work with the Governor to get help where it's needed as quickly as possible."
