Albuquerque, NM — State Senators Nicole Tobiassen (R-Albuquerque) and Jay Block (R-Rio Rancho) today celebrated the groundbreaking of Pacific Fusion's new Research and Manufacturing Campus at Mesa del Sol, calling the $1 billion project a major win for New Mexico's economy and its future as a hub for advanced energy technology.
The facility will house Pacific Fusion's Demonstration System, aimed at achieving net facility gain, producing more fusion energy than it consumes, by 2030. The project builds on decades of applied physics research at Sandia National Laboratories and is expected to create more than 200 long-term jobs, along with hundreds of construction jobs, while generating energy applications with uses ranging from the power grid to national defense.
"This is exactly the kind of investment New Mexico should be fighting for," said Senator Tobiassen. "Pacific Fusion chose Albuquerque because our workforce and our national labs can deliver, and this project will bring high-paying, long-term careers to families right here in our community. We need more of this kind of bold, forward-looking investment in our state."
Senator Block emphasized the project's importance to both the state's energy future and its defense industry ties.
"Fusion energy isn't just about the power grid, it's also about our national security," said Senator Block. "Having cutting-edge fusion technology developed and manufactured right here in New Mexico strengthens our role in both the clean energy economy and our defense capabilities. This is the type of company we should be working every day to attract and support."
Both lawmakers pointed to the project as proof that New Mexico can compete for major private investment when state and local leaders work together with the private sector.
"New Mexico has the talent, the labs, and the location to lead in the industries of the future," Tobiassen said. "Projects like this show what's possible when we prioritize economic growth and give innovative companies a reason to plant roots here."
