Motorists should avoid the area and expect an extended detour
SOCORRO, N.M. — The New Mexico Department of Transportation has closed U.S. 60 at mile marker 131.5, just west of Socorro, after heavy rainfall and flooding caused severe damage to the embankment supporting a bridge.
Floodwaters caused significant erosion near Bridge 6358, leaving the structure in a vulnerable condition. For the safety of the traveling public, U.S. 60 will remain closed at the bridge until a full assessment is completed and necessary repairs can be made.
NMDOT crews and bridge personnel are assessing the extent of the damage. Repair work is tentatively expected to begin Thursday, Oct. 1, following completion of the assessment. A reopening date has not yet been determined.
Due to the location of the closure, motorists should expect a significant detour. The designated detour is approximately 287 miles and includes portions of the following highways:
Interstate 25, mile markers 148-203
N.M. 6, mile markers 0-35
N.M. 117, mile markers 0-57
Interstate 40, mile markers 85.5-126.5
N.M. 36, mile markers 0-21.5
U.S. 60, mile markers 34.5-112
Motorists should be aware that portions of the detour include unpaved roadways. Recent rainfall has left these roads extremely muddy and difficult to travel. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are strongly recommended for motorists who must use these routes. Conditions may continue to deteriorate with additional rainfall.
Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid the area, plan ahead and allow significant additional travel time. Drivers should not attempt to travel around barricades or enter the closed section of roadway.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation is committed to protecting the safety of the traveling public and appreciates motorists' patience and cooperation while crews assess and repair the damage.
