Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming part of the business landscape, creating new opportunities for organizations to improve efficiency, strengthen customer engagement, and support employees. For small businesses, however, knowing where to start can be challenging.

To help Southern New Mexico businesses better understand and prepare for the growing role of artificial intelligence, New Mexico State University Global Campus is partnering with the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance to present AI Readiness for Small Business, an online course designed to help business owners and professionals develop a practical understanding of AI and its potential applications in the workplace.

The partnership brings together NMSU Global Campus' expertise in accessible online education and MVEDA's commitment to supporting business growth and economic development in the region.

"AI is changing the workplace, and education can help businesses change with it," said Andrew Sedillo, NMSU Global executive director of strategic initiatives and partnerships. "NMSU Global Campus is committed to giving professionals and businesses access to practical learning that keeps pace with emerging technologies. Our partnership with MVEDA is a great opportunity to help small businesses understand AI and make informed decisions about how they can use it."

For small businesses, the need for AI awareness is particularly significant since many operate with limited staff and resources. AI tools can potentially assist with content development, customer communication, research, data analysis and other routine business activities. Businesses also need to understand any limitations and issues such as accuracy, privacy, security and responsible use.

The AI Readiness for Small Business course is intended to give participants a foundation for navigating these opportunities and challenges. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach to AI adoption, the course encourages participants to consider how artificial intelligence fits their business needs and goals.

"Technology is changing the way businesses operate, and small businesses need access to information and resources that can help them keep pace," said Davin Lopez, president and CEO of the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance. "Building AI awareness can help business owners make more informed decisions about where these tools may add value while recognizing where human expertise and judgment remain critical."

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the region's business community through education and access to relevant resources. MVEDA supports economic growth and job creation in Doña Ana County by connecting businesses with information, resources, and opportunities that can contribute to their success.
