House Republicans Call on Democrats to Listen to Voters and Stop Tax Increase Proposals
SANTA FE – Voters in Albuquerque sent a clear message yesterday by rejecting tax increases proposed by Albuquerque Public Schools. In a mail-in election, residents overwhelmingly voted against increasing property taxes with nearly 70 percent rejecting one proposal.
Not to be outdone, House Democrats have proposed tax increases in gasoline, income tax and on new vehicles despite a budget surplus of over $1 billion in New Mexico. Democrats are currently re-working their tax increase proposals outside public view with a plan to present them at a later date. After Tuesday's election results, House Republicans are calling on Democrats to listen to voters and put a stop to their proposed tax increases.
"The taxpayers of the state, particularly businesses in the energy sector, have delivered a massive surplus to New Mexico," said Rep. Jim Townsend (R-Artesia). "That's why it makes no sense to raise taxes on our families. We stand with the voters who rejected such an increase."
"Families all over the state work hard and live within their budget, state government needs to do exactly the same," said Rep. Jason Harper (R-Rio Rancho).
