The Bayard Public Library, 1112 Central Avenue, will be presenting two Children's Holiday Craft Days: (1) Making Sand Dollar Ornaments on Friday December 14 from 3:00-4:30 pm. and (2) Decorating Christmas Stockings on Saturday December 15 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Parents are requested to wait in the library for their child if the child is 9 years old or younger. For more information, call Jody Decker, 575-537-6244. These two events are free and open to the public and should be a lot of fun for the kids.

Gateway Plaza Grill in Hurley
In a recent column I mentioned that I was going to have to go to the Gateway Plaza Grill and check out their Friday night steak dinner. Well, I did! It was quite good and a lot of food. The steaks were good, but what I loved was the salad - it was one of the best I've had in a very long time. I will go back again.

Like many others, I was wondering if winter was ever going to get here. I think it (winter) arrived this week. All the colorful fall leaves are finding their way to the ground and in a way that makes me sad, but I need to remember that there is another type of beauty in the starkness of bare trees in the gray winter skies.

I'm looking forward to the Christmas lights in the Mining District; as in past years, they have been so pretty. I love the decorations and would decorate my house, except that I only have one outside electrical socket and am afraid I would over load the circuits. Since I can't decorate my house, I go out and enjoy what everyone else has done. Hurley, in particular, has many fantastic light displays. See below.

Calling all Kids!
The Town of Hurley will be having a visit from Santa on December 22. He will be at 100 Cortez Ave. (next door to the Town Hall) in from 1 - 2 p.m. Bring the kids and bring your cameras!

Hurley will also be holding their annual Hay Ride & Decorating Contest. This year they will depart from the Gateway Plaza. Hay Ride participants are invited to enjoy complimentary hot dogs and hot chocolate at the Gateway from 4:30 - 5:30 pm., compliments of the Hurley Pride and Gateway Plaza.

The hay ride will depart from the Gateway at 5:30 pm sharp! Four hay wagons will be available this year and folks are asked to dress warm and bring a blanket for the ride. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The public is invited to follow the hay wagons as we tour the streets of Hurley to see all the decorations.

Decorations will be judged during the hay ride. Cash prizes will be awarded! First Place, $100. Second Place, $75. Third Place, $50. Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Places awarded $25 each. Best decorated fence will be awarded $25. A sign will be permanently displayed recognizing the 'best decorated street'!
