It's going to happen for the Lady Stangs, it has to, and they will start winning and not just competing. But last night wasn't it. Despite playing solidly, the home team lost 79-70. WNMU shot the ball better than the visiting Mountaineers, 41% to 37% and forced 20 WSC turnovers but it just wasn't enough. Despite forcing 20 turnovers and getting 9 steals the Lady Stangs only got 13 points off those turnovers. It was a back and forth affair that saw 7 lead changes and 4 ties but Western State used an 8-0 run to start the second half to pull away from the Mustangs and hold on at the end as the Lady Stangs got within 6 points several times in the last couple of minutes.
WNMU was led in scoring once again by Kassie Scott who continues to play well for WNMU as she hit for 23 points on 6-12 shooting. Morgan Wohltman continues to get her shooting touch back adding 17 for the purple and gold while Jelesia Gray carded her first double-double as a Mustang. The JR forward from Central Arizona JC grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 15 points. Heather Hamilton added 8 points and Amanda Tucker 7 to round out the Lady Stang scoring.
Western State had 4 players in double figures led by Nikki Trujillo wiht 21. Katie Hall added her own double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points. Many of those rebounds were key offensive rebounds that helped keep Western State in the lead. WSC garnered 10 second chance points in the 2nd half; WNMU had only 3. Western State's bench players also outscored WNMU 21 to 7. Coach Adams needs to find that spark off the bench to keep the scoring going when he rests his starters. WNMU remains winless on the season as Western State improves to .500 but 4-0 in RMAC play. The Lady Stangs will hit the road next for games at CSU-Pueblo and UC-Colorado Springs this weekend.
