Looking for their first home win in conference play the Lady Mustangs came in with vengeance after a tough road loss to Midwestern State.
On the board first on a three from Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado), followed up by a layup from Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) the Lady Mustangs got a fast start on the Javelinas. Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) would connect on another three to put Western up 8-3. The rest of the first would be turnover after turnover by both teams.
Both Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) and Nirae Petty (Seattle, Washington/Rainier Beach High School) connected in the paint to put Lady Mustangs up 14-13 early on. In a battle from beyond the arc, both team took their chances from deep. An unaccounted for three early on changed the score to 19-18 in favor of the Javelinas with three minutes left to play in the first half.
Both teams would go back and forth connecting on fast breaks, Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) connecting on two to bring her point total to 11. A jump ball gave way to one last possession. A last minute shot fell short as Western headed to the locker room trailing by one.
It was quiet through the first two minutes, before Kingsville connected on a jumper to break the silence giving way to a 5-1 run. Western didn't let up, never letting the Javelinas get ahead by more than four.
Headed into the fourth and final quarter, Kingsville kept the ball moving. Quick up and down the court, Western struggled to get back on defense.
With their post players in foul trouble, Western had to play it safe with two minutes left to play and trailing by five. Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) found her groove connecting from deep to bring her team within one and in possession of the ball with seconds remaining.
Mishandled on the inbound play, Kingsville gained possession with 2.1 seconds. Adding to her total, Brynae Thompsen got to the line to push her team to 64-62 as the clock ran out.
Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) had a big night finishing with 23 points, shooting 8-17 from the floor, 1-4 from the perimeter and a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Teammate Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) continues her double-digit scoring streak with 16 points on the night.
Saturday is another day for the Lady Mustangs as they play host to Angelo State at 2 p.m. on Drag's Court.
