The Western New Mexico Mustangs went into Thursday's road matchup at Texas A&M-Commerce looking for their first Lone Star Conference victory on the season, and they would need an extra five minutes of play to get that victory.

The two teams would trade shots for the first several minutes of the game. The Lions would gain the advantage before halftime, however, capitalizing on some Mustang turnovers to take a ten-point lead at the half, 40-30.

The second half was a different story as the Mustangs erased the halftime deficit to eventually gain the lead. They would hold onto the lead until the closing seconds when Commerce managed to hit a contested shot to force overtime.

The overtime period was tight all the way through, but the Lions managed to take a one-point lead in the last minute. They would not hold that lead. With only six seconds remaining Western's Davis Wade (Jackson, MS/Will C Wood) was fouled attempting a 3pt jumper. Wade would make two out of three free throws to give the Mustangs a one-point lead. Commerce managed to get a shot off but it would come up short and Western would leave with the 74-73 OT victory.

Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) paced the Mustangs with a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double. Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) would add 12 points and 8 rebounds, CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) 12 and 7, while Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) had 11 and 7 on the night.

Western will look to continue their winning ways when they visit Tarleton St on Saturday for another conference matchup.
