Both the men's and women's teams from Western New Mexico will open their regular seasons this week with the men on the road and the women beginning play at home. Coach Mark Coleman and the Mustangs will open play this Wednesday with a visit to Phoenix and Grand Canyon University. The Stangs and Lopers have not played each other since the 2008-9 season when Western took an 80-78 victory at home. The Mustangs currently own a 2 game winning streak against the Lopers.
Grand Canyon is coming off a 19-8 season in which they made the NCAA post season tournament losing in the first round to eventual national champion Central Washington. WNMU hopes to improve on last year's 9-17 overall record. The Mustangs return several starters including unanimous All RMAC selection Chad Carter. Carter averaged 16 points per game last year and was the team's leading rebounder with 6 per game. Lucio Luttrell, Juan Saurez, Ryan Crane, Merle 'Te' Branch all saw lots of playing time last year and started most of the Mustang's games. Other key players returning include Brelan Berry, Darryl Littleton and Andy Solich. Solich missed last season due to a knee injury and was the team's leading 3 pt shooter the previous year. Tip off is 6:30 p.m. and can be heard locally on 92.9 FM KSCQ.
The Lady Stangs will once again start their season on Drag's Court by facing the University of the Southwest from Hobbs, NM USA (as they prefer). WNMU has a new coach in Rusty Kennedy but returns a number of key players from last year's squad. Leading scorer Kassie Scott, along with previous All RMAC selection Morgan Wohltman return along with Heather Hamilton and Lonnie Sanchez. The four were the Lady Stangs' leading scorers and rebounders from last year. Coach Kennedy will also get Jelesia Gray, Kim Clark, Larissa Loera back; each played significant time and were part time starters. Among the newcomers to the squad is former Silver High star, Kaitlyn Hopwood. Hopwood played for Ft. Lewis College last season. Tip off for the Lady Stangs is Thursday night at 6:00 p.m.
