WNMU men's basketball got off to a better start in their second game of the season but once again couldn't close the deal late as the Mustangs fell to Montana State University - Billings 67-61 in Hilo HI. The Stangs fall to 0-2 on the young season while MSU-B improves and stays undefeated at 2-0.
The Stangs had their chances as they jumped out to an early lead, 9-3, as Brelan Berry got off to a hot start. MSU-B would not go away and put together an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to take the lead. Andy Solich came off the bench to hit a 3 point shot giving WNMU a lead but once again the Yellowjackets answered with a 3 point shot of their own followed by a bucket and free throw. Western would finish the first half as they started as Ryan Crane hit a jumper to start the Mustang rally. Merle Branch added a pair from the charity stripe and the surge was on for the Stangs. Juan Suarez and Lucio Luttrell would add big buckets along with Darryl Littleton and Western would take a 34-28 lead into intermission.
The second half began much as the game did with an early 7-4 run extending their lead to 41-32 as Luttrell hit a pair from the free throw line and Suarez canned a 3 pointer. The 9 point lead came at the 18:31 mark and would be the largest lead of the game. MSU-B then came storming back just as they did in the first half, this time putting together a 9-0 run to tie the game at 41. WNMU would regain the lead and the teams went back and forth as Solich heated up from long distance hitting three straight 3 point shots. The Mustangs had a slim lead with just 3 minutes left but once again couldn't close the deal as MSU-B found their range and held on for a late win.
WNMU was lead in the scoring column by Suarez and Berry with 13 a piece while Solich added 12 off the bench in just 16 minutes of play. Chad Carter lead the team in rebounds with 9. Turnovers hut the Mustangs, especially in the 2nd half, as the Stangs lost control of the ball 25 times, 12 in the second half leading to 16 second half points for MSU-B.
WNMU will have a quick turnaround as they face tournament host Hawaii-Hilo tonight at 10:30 p.m. Mountain time.
