Chadron State ranked #20 in the nation was unable to use home field advantage on Saturday to get a win in the opening round of the NCAA D-II football championship tournament. CSC hosted #16 West Texas A&M falling 38-30. The game was a back and forth affair as each team was able to take the lead answering the other team's scores. It came down to a defensive stand late by WTAM stopping an Eagle comeback bid.
Khiry Robinson powered the Buffalo attack carrying the ball 30 times for 235 yards. Robinson had carried the ball only 150 times all season for the Buffs, who boasted one of the top passing attacks in the country. CSC was trailing 38-23 late when QB John McClain engineered a 12 play 83 yard TD drive that took just 1:35 off the clock. After a successful onside kick, CSC seemed to have all the momentum. Glen Clinton rushed for 15 yards on 2 carries to get to the Buffalo 38 yard line. WTAM forced 3 straight incomplete passes and on 4th and 10 McClain hit Allan Schmaltz for a 9 yard gain but he was short of first down marker and the ended the Eagle's hopes for a comeback.
West Texas will take on the 2nd seed in the Super Region 4 bracket, Ashland University this Saturday. Top seed CSU-Pueblo, who got a first round bye along with Ashland, will face Indianapolis after they beat Midwestern State 31-14. The #4 seed will travel to Pueblo for a noon kickoff this Saturday.
