After getting a season opening win and ending a 35 game losing streak, WNMU women's basketball has a new found sense of confidence. They played well on the road Tuesday night but a second half comeback fell just short as the Lady Stangs lost to Texas A&M International 64-58. The loss evened Western's record a 1-1.

WNMU got off to a quick start on the road building a 6-2 lead after opening with jumpers by Morgan Wohltman and Kassie Scott. TAMIU would answer with a 6-0 run of their own to take an 8-6 lead. After that the teams would go back and forth finding themselves tied five different times. Then the home team would put together another run, 8-0, to take control leading by as many as 12 points. WNMU kept fighting and closed the first half strong as Scott hit a free throw and then a lay up to score the final 3 points of the first half. Western went into the intermission down 32-23.

Coach Rusty Kennedy gave a great half time speech and the Lady Stangs came out on fire as Veronica Celaya got 3 points the old fashioned way; a made bucket and foul shot. Wohltman then hit a jumper off of a steal on the next play, then repeated the feat on the next possession and Western was within 2 points 49-47 with just six minutes to go in the game. The home team felt the pressure and called a time out, hitting a 3 point shot out of the break to spark an 8-0 run putting the Mustangs down by 10 points. Western continued to battle keeping defensive pressure on the Dustdevils but just couldn't quite get their shots to fall. Despite outscoring Texas A&M 11-6 over the last 3 minutes, Western fell to the home team.

Scott lead all scorers with 19 points to go along with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. Wohltman added 16 points, 3 boards and 3 assists. Celaya was a big spark off the bench posting 15 points in only 22 minutes of play and she had a team high 6 rebounds.

WNMU has a quick turnaround as they head from Laredo to Phoenix where they will open play in the Grand Canyon Tournament on Friday at 2:30 p.m. against the host team.
