WNMU faced a tough Colorado School of Mines team Friday night on Drag's Court and gave the visiting Oredigger's all they could handle but in the end the depth of Mines' bench proved to be the difference as CSM pulled away for a 70-53 victory over the Lady Stangs.
Colorado School of Mines started the game strong jumping out to an 11-4 lead four minutes in. Western New Mexico University would fight back with Kassie Scott tallying a layup, Heather Hamilton a pair of free throws, Morgan Wohltman a jumper and after Scott drilled another jumper, Wohltman gave WNMU their first lead on a three at 15-12 at the 11:49 mark.
The lead would get as high as six with Scott making a three on the next trip down the floor to extend the Lady Mustangs run to 14-1. The teams would tie five more times over the rest of the first half with the teams going into halftime at 29-all. The Lady Mustangs opened the second half with a basket from Scott in the paint for the 31-29 lead. CSM would storm back with a 9-0 run to take a seven-point lead, 38-31, nearly three minutes into the second half.
The Lady Mustangs would trim the deficit to five a minute later on a pair of foul shots from Scott, and Scott would help bring WNMU within six a little later splitting a pair from the line. Each time WNMU came close, CSM had an answer. The Orediggers pushed the lead to 11 on a quick 5-0 run. After the Lady Mustangs got back to within seven at 45-38 on a free throw from Hamilton, the Orediggers used a 10-0 run to take a 17-point lead near the midway point of the half.
The Lady Mustangs would get as close as 14 a couple of times down the stretch with the last coming at 1:36 on a layup from Sasha Montez. But they just couldn't get over the hump and Mines held on for the win.
Scott led the Lady Mustangs with 18 points, while Wohltman added 17. Hamilton led the team in rebounds with seven. WNMU will return to action Saturday night when they will host Colorado Christian with game time set for 5:30 p.m. on Drag's Court. Christian fell to the Cowgirls of NM Highlands last night 87-83. Both teams are 0-1 in conference play.
