CSU-Pueblo, the #1 ranked team in the nation and #1 seed in the NCAA D-II football champions is no different than any other team. The old adage that it's hard to beat a team twice in one season held true, as the Thunderwolves fell to the Buffaloes of West Texas A&M 34-13 in Pueblo on Saturday. Pueblo had opened the season with a win over the then #24 ranked Buffs.

WTAM has the top passing attack in the NCAA D-II ranks but they used defense to stifle the Pack running game. The Buffs got a 74 yard TD pass from Dustin Vaughn to Nathan Slaughter on their game opening drive to set the tone for their offense. The Buff defense then stifled the vaunted Pack running attack holding J.B. Mathews and his running back teammates to just 32 yards on the ground in the first half. The Pack running game averaged over 230 yards a game this season and CSUP had 265 on the ground against WTAM in their first meeting.

Vaughn would continue to drive the Buffalo passing attack hitting 2 more TD strikes in the first half, a 13 yard score to Slaughter and a 1 yard strike to Khiry Robison late in the second half. A couple more long passes gave WTAM a closing seconds field goal to go up at the break 24-3.

RMAC Player of the Year Ross Dausin tried to keep the pack in the game as he completed 22-33 passing attempts for 193 yards and the lone TD for the Pack. But an interception late in the 2nd quarter and a fumble after being sacked stifled two rare drives for Pueblo. Mathews would be held to just 75 yards rushing on 16 carries, but the majority of those yards came late in the game when the issue was not in doubt.

Vaughn passed for 324 yards and 3 TDs while Khiry Robinson toted the rock 26 times for 120 yards in the A&M win. West Texas will play Winston Salem State on Saturday in the semi-finals.
