Silver City, New Mexico - November 20, 2012

During the October RED DOT Studio Tour and Gallery Walk in Silver City, NM, local artist Sue Szajer opened her studio and asked visitors if they would like to try painting with dye on cotton fabric. A technique she uses in creating fabric for her own quilts.

Each "artist" painted a block in a design of their choice and then signed the piece. After the tour, she divided them into three groups that seemed to work together. The first group was comprised mostly of geometric and wavy designs. They were cut, pieced and sewn together into Studio Quilt #1.

Quilt #2 was designed using blocks that reflected the sky and earth theme, mostly done in blue, yellow and black. Some of the blocks were kept intact, others were cut, and some were used for the binding.

Quilt #3 uses the blocks that were completely painted in a natural theme. The resulting quilt can be perceived as a walk through the woods.
The results are stunning. The signatures of the artists are included on the back of each quilt. Every piece measures 36 X 22 inches. Each quilt is valued at $500, but is being offered at an individual discounted price of $300 with all proceeds to benefit the Arts and Cultural District in recognition of the valuable community service they provide in promoting cultural events, entrepreneurship and tourism.

The group may be viewed at the Lois Duffy Gallery at 211-C North Texas Street in historic Silver City. Phone 575.313.9631.
