Visitors seeking solitude encouraged to find alternate trails

(Silver City, NM, March 12, 2026) — The Gomez Grind, an endurance run lasting at least 24 hours, will take place March 14 and 15 at Gomez Peak on the Silver City Ranger District of the Gila National Forest. Hikers, bikers, horseback riders and all other forest recreators desiring seclusion may wish to consider alternate recreation locations.

The run begins and ends at Gomez Peak Pavilion, and the primary race course circles Gomez Peak on #717 Angel Loop Trail. Although foot traffic for the run will be limited to 0.75 miles of connector trails from the pavilion up to Angel Loop and the 1.5-mile Angel Loop itself, there will likely be more people than usual in the overall Gomez Peak recreation area.

The course map and additional event details are available on the Gomez Grind event website. Users can access nearby trails from entry points on Little Walnut Road both south and north of Gomez Peak Pavilion, and on North Fork Walnut Creek Road. Other options in the Silver City area include trailheads in the Pinos Altos or Bear Mountain areas.

Call the Silver City Ranger District at 575-388-8201 for additional suggestions, visit the Gila National Forest recreation page for information on recreation sites on the forest, or explore the Forest Service interactive visitor map to see locations of developed sites and trails.
