The Western New Mexico University Museum, in collaboration with the USFS, is hosting a hands-on workshop in honor of World Archaeology Day on Saturday, October 17th, 2026 from 9 AM to 2 PM.

This event invites the public to join us and learn about the different methods that archaeologists use to gather data and understand past lifeways. Several stations will be set up including demonstrations on flotation (the process of removing organics from soil), a grinding station showing methods of processing mesquite pods and corn into a fine flour, and pinch pot and yucca paintbrush making illustrating how the Mimbres people formed vessels and utilized plant life around them to paint.

This is a great opportunity for the public to participate in and celebrate World Archaeology Day. World Archaeology Day or International Archaeology Day is traditionally held on the third Saturday in October. The day recognizes the contributions of archaeology to society. This is a great way to inspire public awareness in our understanding of the past and encourage engagement with the preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage. We are excited to bring the local community of Silver City together for this event and invite people of all ages who are curious to learn.

This free event is to take place indoors at the WNMU Museum and will have light refreshments for attendees.
