On behalf of the Grant County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Raul Villanueva would like to wish a safe and Happy Halloween to everyone, especially those little ghosts and goblins.

Here are a few Halloween Safety Tips:

•Wear light-colored clothing that's short enough to prevent tripping and reflective tape to the sides, front and back of costume.

•Costumes should be made of fire resistant materials.

•Have emergency identification such as name, address and phone number hidden within the child's costume.

•Teach children their home phone number and how to call 911. Remind them they can call 911 from any phone for free, even cell phones .

•Make sure children can see well through facemasks, or use cosmetics to create fun or scary faces.

•Children as well as adults should be able to hear approaching traffic, if wearing masks.

•Avoid having children go trick or treating alone, they should walk in groups, or travel with an adult.

•Have kids use a flashlight while trick or treating alone, they should walk in groups, or travel with an adult.

•Stay within the neighborhood and only visit homes you know.

•Watch for traffic and drive at safe speeds.

•Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of roads facing traffic.

•Only give and accept wrapped or packaged candy. Examine all candy before allowing children to eat it

•Keep costumed children away from pets. The pet may not recognize the child and become frightened and bite.

•Avoid hard plastic or wood props such as daggers and swords. Substitute with foam rubber, which is soft and flexible. Simulated knives and guns should not appear authentic

•Take extra effort to eliminate tripping hazards on your porch or driveway.

Sheriff's deputies will be out patrolling neighborhoods in marked and unmarked units for your safety. Report any suspicious or illegal activity immediately to Central Dispatch at 388-8840 non-emergency or 911 in an emergency.
